Resumo: Objectives: Observe whether there is a relationship between the duration of dental impaction and the prevalence of the dentigerous cyst. Methods: Data were collected from histopathological reports which showed dentigerous cyst and pericoronal follicles as well as information regarding age, gender, histopathological diagnosis confirmation and specimen location of upper and lower third molar teeth. Results: A higher prevalence of dentigerous cyst diagnosis was identified in men aged 21 years or older (p=0.001), in the mandible (p=0.010). The risk estimate was significant for men, in the mandible, and the relative risk was 1.25 (1;05-1;49) higher for the diagnosis of dentigerous cyst in the age group of 21 years or older, a relationship was observed between the increased time of tooth impaction, with the higher prevalence of dentigerous cyst in third molars. The prophylactic extraction of these teeth, even when asymptomatic, was suggested. In women, the results were not statistically significant. Conclusion: A correlation between extended dental impaction duration and heightened dentigerous cyst prevalence in mandibular third molars among male patients aged 21 years or olde.
