Título: THE DIAGNOSTIC CHALLENGES BETWEEN ACTINIC CHEILITIS AND SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA OF THE LIP

Resumo: OBJECTIVE: Analyze the sociodemographic characteristics of a population diagnosed with actinic cheilitis that underwent transformation to squamous cell carcinoma treated at a public institution from 2000 to 2020. STUDY DESIGN: It's a retrospective evaluation of the medical records of 292 patients from a public institution. Statistics used the Students t-test, and p <0.05 were considered significant. RESULTS: Mean age of patients was 61.6 years old (22-98), disease progression was 14.2 months (1-240), and lesion size was 3.1cm (0.03-9.0). About patients, 79.1% were men and 20.8% were women; 87% white, 2.4% black and 10.3% brown. Tabagism, 24% had never smoked; 75.9% smoke, and of these 55.2% call themselves ex-smokers. Alcoholism, 32.7% have never drunk, 41% habitually drink and 26% have drunk before. Only 4.7% report being exposed to the sun, but 92.5% simply don't know. Severity, 25.8% were in stage I; 11.2% in II; 8.2% in III; 9.3 in IVa; 1.4% in IVb; and 0.03 in the IVc. About patients, 53% died within 5 years. CONCLUSION: The study shows that actinic cheilitis needs to be treated with its potential for malignant transformation, especially for people who don't recognize their continuous exposure to the sun.
