Resumo: Objective: To verify the prevalence of carotid atheromas identified on panoramic radiographs by sex and age of the patients affected, and to highlight the relevance of dental radiological examinations in the early detection of alterations in the anatomical structures of the head and neck.
Methodology: A narrative literature review was conducted, examining 20 scientific articles selected from the PubMed and LILACS databases. The selection criteria included articles published from 2010 onwards, focusing on case studies, systematic reviews, and original research addressing the prevalence, diagnosis, and clinical implications of carotid atheroma. Editorials, commentaries, and studies before 2010 were excluded from the analysis to guarantee the timeliness of the data analyzed.
Results: The age range with the highest prevalence of carotid atheromas identified on panoramic radiographs was 43 to 90 years, with a higher prevalence in women over 50.
Conclusion: The results reinforce the relevance of dental radiographic examinations as effective tools for the early diagnosis of vascular conditions. Identifying these lesions early can enable timely interventions, potentially reducing the risk of serious complications such as strokes. Therefore, integrating vascular screening protocols during dental examinations can play an important role in preventing adverse cardiovascular events.
