Resumo: Objective: This study aims to identify the incidence and prevention of root resorption in patients undergoing orthodontic treatmentsStudy Design: A search was conducted in the PubMed and SciELO databases from 2014 to 2024, including publications in English and Portuguese using the terms "root resorption" and "orthodontic appliance." A total of 93 articles were considered eligible for review, and the 6 most relevant were selected to meet the studys objectives. Results: Scientific studies show that root resorption is a common and undesirable consequence of orthodontic treatment. It occurs when mechanical forces exerted on the tooth apex exceed the surrounding tissues capacity to resist and repair, leading to a permanent reduction in root length. The inflammatory process known as external apical root resorption (EARR) primarily occurs around the root's apical contour due to osteoclast activity, which may explain this iatrogenic complication. Treatment duration, type of appliance, and force intensity can increase the risk. Conclusion: After reviewing the selected articles, root resorption in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment is common and unwanted, primarily affecting the upper incisors. Adjusting forces and treatment duration is essential to minimize the risk of root resorption. Regular radiographic monitoring is also important for detecting potential root lesions.
