Área Temática: Odontologia hospitalar

Resumo: Objective:The literature is scarce regarding oral conditions in oncology patients admitted to Cancer Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The objective of this study was to evaluate the frequency of intraoral findings observed during ICU admission, and to verify if there is an association with clinical risks factors. Study design:This prospective trial included all consecutive ICU admissions resulting from unplanned hospitalizations. Patients who were hospitalized in ICU due to post-surgical recovery were excluded from the study . Data on oral mucosa lesions, saliva, dental condition and oral hygiene were evaluated during oral 3 phases: Phase 1 (within 24 hours post-ICU admission), Phase 2 (after 3 days), and Phase 3 (after 5 days). Results: A total of 102 patients, 63 female and 39 male, were evaluated. The majority (80.3%) showed intraoral findings during ICU admission. The most frequent findings were crusted lips, coated tongue, pale mucosa, candidiasis, depapillated tongue and traumatic lesions. There were significant higher association in patients with metastatic solid tumors (p=0.041) and thrombocytopenia (p=0.038). Conclusion: Oral findings were frequent in oncology patients hospitalised in the ICU and some of them were associated with worse clinical prognosis.
