Resumo: Aim: To evaluate the prevalence of diagnosed oral and oropharyngeal cancer in an oncological dentistry service over one year. Materials and Methods: This was a prospective cohort study with analysis of data from medical records of patients who underwent biopsy and histopathological examination and had conclusive results for oral or oropharyngeal cancer in a self-referral service. Data were recorded on a specific form and statistically analyzed using Pearsons chi-square test, Fishers exact test, and Students T-test. Results: 80 patients underwent biopsy and histopathological examination. 50% were diagnosed with cancer, predominantly squamous cell carcinoma, and the most frequent site was the tongue. The sample was mostly composed of males with a history of smoking and alcoholism and an average age of 61 years. 40% presented locoregional metastasis. Most patients took more than sixty days to start treatment and around 17% died within approximately 100 days. Conclusion: Oral and oropharyngeal cancer diagnosed by dentists was proven to have a frequency that deserves to be highlighted. The results emphasize the importance of early diagnosis for a better prognosis.
