Resumo: Mucormycosis, a rare but aggressive fungal infection, is increasingly observed in young patients. This case report presents a 33-year-old male patient with a 23-week history of mucormycosis affecting the left maxillary sinus. Clinical manifestations include a nodular mass in the anterior maxillary region accompanied by pustules, dental mobility, increased volume in the hard palate, and purulent nasal discharge. Tomographic evaluation revealed thickening of the left maxillary sinus due to local inflammation. Biopsy from the palatal region and secretion collection from the left maxillary sinus were performed. Microscopic examination revealed necrotic areas infiltrated by thick-walled, broad, non-septate fungal hyphae. Periodic acid-Schiff staining highlighted these organisms, confirming the diagnosis of mucormycosis. The patient was found to have uncontrolled diabetes, which he was unaware of until the fungal infection manifested. This case underscores the importance of prompt diagnosis and management of mucormycosis, especially in immunocompromised individuals, to prevent significant morbidity and mortality.
