Resumo: Aim: To identify the development of oral mucositis (OM) and the need for enteral nutrition in head and neck cancer (HNC) patients who underwent treatment and prophylactic photobiomodulation (PBM). Materials and methods: This is a prospective cohort study carried out with 51 HNC patients, who were followed up during radiotherapy (with or without concomitant chemotherapy) with PBM on alternate days. Data collection consisted of an interview and a clinical examination of the oral cavity at every PBM session. Results: 94% of patients had some degree of OM, most mild to moderate. All 20% of patients who needed enteral nutrition during treatment developed OM, five of which had severe OM. Conclusion: OM was related to HNC treatment. Although the need for enteral nutrition was low, it was always associated with moderate and severe OM. The PBM may be among the alternatives for preventing moderate and severe OM.
