Resumo: Objective: To identify the development of oral mucositis and to evaluate the need for enteral nutrition in patients with head and neck cancer treated with radiotherapy and chemotherapy undergoing preventive photobiomodulation. Methods: The patients were submitted to prophylactic photobiomodulation three times a week on alternate days during the entire period of radiotherapy, at which time they had the oral cavity evaluated and the data recorded in a form. Oral mucositis was classified according to the NCI table, the nutritional route was classified as oral or enteral (nasogastric or nasoenteral tube) and the presence of pain was classified according to the Visual Analogue Pain Scale. Results: The sample consisted of 22 patients, most of whom were men with a predominant diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma. It was found that 21 patients had OM during cancer treatment, with the worst grades being 2 (31.8%) and 3 (45.5%). Only 4 individuals required enteral nutrition and they had an OM grade > 2. Conclusion: Preventive photobiomodulation seemed to prevent severe cases of OM, thus helping patients to maintain oral nutrition.
