Título: USE OF CURCUMIN GEL IN THE TREATMENT OF ORAL EROSIVE LICHEN PLANUS LESIONS: A REPORT OF FOUR CASES

Resumo: Erosive lichen planus (ELP) is a chronic inflammatory that results in painful ulcerations in the skin and/or mucosal surfaces. Currently the treatment of ELP has included systemic corticosteroids, immunosuppressants and/or oral retinoids. Curcumin have been found to have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anticancer properties. In this study, four female patients (mean age: 51-years-old; range: 39-62 years old) were diagnosed with oral ELP and treated with curcumin gel (1%) three times per day. After 7 days, there was a decrease in the Visual Analogue Pain Scale. After 15 days, one patient showed total clinical remission of the lesion, and three patients reported no pain. The curcumin gel can be a new alternative for the treatment in cases of oral ELP. The chronicity and recalcitrant nature of the disease demand the long term use of corticosteroids with ensuing adverse effects. Clinical trials are needed to evaluate the effect of the curcumin gel.
