Resumo: People with serious mental disorders (MD) have a shorter life expectancy associated with cardiovascular problems. A higher prevalence of smoking or nicotine dependence may contribute to a greater cardiovascular risk and various oral diseases in these individuals. The objective of this study was to evaluate the consumption of tobacco products and the level of nicotine dependence in patients with MD. One hundred and thirty-nine men diagnosed with MD underwent anamnesis and the Fagerström nicotine dependence test. Of this total, 106 (76%) were smokers and had used an average of 17.8 cigarettes per day (1-53 years). Respondents reported that they smoked industrialized cigarettes (62.1%), handmade cigarettes (17.4%) or both (27.1%). The health status assessment showed that some patients already had lung problems (9.5%), high blood pressure (5.8%), cardiovascular problems (2.9%) and diabetes (2.9%). The average for the Fagerström nicotine dependence test was 5.1, considered a moderate level. The prevalence of smoking and nicotine dependence in the studied sample was considered high. Patients with MD become vulnerable to developing various diseases that can seriously compromise their health, including oral health. Counseling on the importance of smoking cessation and tobacco prevention programs should be an integral component of dental education and practice.
