Título: ORAL CARE BY A HOSPITAL DENTAL TEAM IN INTENSIVE CARE UNIT TO REDUCE MISCROSTOMIA IN BURN PATIENTS: A CASE REPORT

Resumo: A 17-years-old female was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit, presenting with extensive 2nd and 3rd degree burns. Hospitalar dentistry team (HDT) was called to provide oral care. The patient was on a regimen of analgesics, antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and corticosteroids. Extra-oral examination revealed ulcerated lesions covering the entire lip without crust formation. Intra-oral examination showed teeth in good condition, good oral hygiene, and an ulcer on the ventral surface of the tongue. All lesions were diagnosed as traumatic ulcer. The HDT indicated the following treatment: (a) photobiostimulation with red spectrum (λ660nm/100mW/1J/1 point each 0,25cm²),on the lips, perioral area, and ulcers intra and extra-oral; (b) two prefabricated mouthgards adjusted one in each dental arch to enable better lip tissues healing and reducing risks of at microstomia; (c) guidance on oral hygiene for the nursing team. The patient showed good progress sugesting that the use of mouthguards proved effectiveness in preventing/reducing microstomia.
