Área Temática: Patologia Oral

Resumo: Background: Intraosseous hemangioma (IH) is an uncommon benign bone tumor, constituting less than 1% of all bone tumors. It rarely affects the face, most commonly involving the maxilla and mandible. Some authors report that IH is easily diagnosed through clinical and radiographic features, but WHO's essential diagnostic criteria for this entity emphasize the need for histopathological analysis to confirm it. Objective: The purpose of this study was to systematically review all available epidemiological, clinicopathological, imaging, therapeutic, follow-up, and recurrence data of IH of the zygomatic bone. Methods: This review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. An electronic search was performed in different databases until July 2023. Results: Fifty-four studies reporting seventy-eight cases confirmed by histopathological analysis were included. IH in the zygomatic bone presented a higher prevalence in middle-aged women, being more diagnosed between the fourth and fifth decades of life. Most cases had similar clinical and imaging characteristics, defined by a well-defined mass, painless, and slow evolution. Surgical treatment was the most used option. In four lesions, periodic follow-up was made and two showed a significant increase. No recurrence was described. Conclusions: IH affecting the zygomatic bone is rare. It has an excellent prognosis and a low rate of recurrence.
