Título: ORAL MANIFESTATIONS OF PATIENTS ADMITTED TO AN INTENSIVE CARE UNIT (ICU)

Resumo: Objective: to evaluate the oral manifestations of patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a Hospital in Southern Brazil. Study design: The present study is retrospective and descriptive. Data from electronic medical records of patients admitted from March to December 2023 were included in the research. The data were tabulated in Excel software and presented in a descriptive manner. Results: 157 hospitalized patients participated in this study, 82 (52.2%) female and 75 (47.8%) male. The average age was 59.66 (±1.18 years). Regarding dental condition, 43 (35.5%) had periodontal disease, 29 (23.9%) had dental caries, 25 (20.6%) had residual roots. Regarding the diagnosis of infections, 23 (13.8%) had candidiasis, 8 (5.1%) herpes simplex and 2 (1.3%) lesions associated with cytomegalovirus. Regarding the changes in the normality pattern observed on clinical examination, 7 (4.5%) had fissured tongue, 5 (3.2%) lingual varicosities, 4 (1.9%) geographic tongue and 2 (1.3% ) melanic pigmentation. Photobiomodulation/photodynamic therapy was applied in 47 (29.9%) and medication was prescribed in 23 (14.6%). Conclusion: This study highlighted several oral manifestations among patients, reinforcing the importance of the dentist in managing these conditions.
