Resumo: Objective: To describe the oral diseases diagnosed along ten years of oral cancer prevention campaigns held in a city in the northwest region of the São Paulo state. Study design: Patients who attended the Basic Health Units on the day of the campaign were examined by previously trained dentists. Patients who had oral lesions detected were referred to a specialized center for final diagnosis by a specialist in Stomatology. Results: In 10 years, 8,851 oral examinations were carried out, in which 662 (7.47%) clinically appearing oral lesions were detected and referred for specialized care. Of the patients referred for specialized care, 513 (77.49%) patients attended, of which 1.36% was diagnosed with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), and 19.49% with oral potentially malignant disorders. Most of the patients were diagnosed with oral benign lesions (70.17%) and normal variations (29.82%). Of the potentially malignant disorders, oral leukoplakia was the most prevalent (67%). Conclusion: Given the high incidence of OSCC, the low rate of diagnosis of this malignancy observed along 10 years demonstrates the need for new efforts for early diagnosis and prevention targeted at the high-risk population.
