Resumo: Objective: To describe three cases of head and neck cancer (HNC) patients undergoing radiotheraphy (RT) who developed acute radiodermatititis (AR) and where treated with an extraoral photobiomodulation theraphy (PBMT).
Study design:The severity of AR was assessed by the National Cancer Institute-Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events version 2.0 (NCI-CTCAE V2.0). Extraoral PBMT GEMINI® (810+980 Diode Laser-Ultradent) was performed in AR region for 30s, at five treatment sites (neck) and five sites (face) (1.0Wx30s=20Jcm2) daily until skin healing.
Results: Two patientes developed AR NCI grade-2, one patient developed AR NCI grade-3 and required RT treatment break. Extraoral PBMT reduced pain and NCI-CTCAE grade 2-3 to grade 1.
Conclusions: The results demonstrates the beneficial effects of the extraoral PBMT in AR and may help for future strategies for toxicity control. Studies to proper management of AR by conducting randomized clinical trials are necessary to reduce the risk on RT interruptions.
