Área Temática: Patologia Oral

Resumo: Periapical lesions (PL), resulting from odontogenic infections, arise due to an inflammatory response triggered by microbial invasion and toxins. Objective: This retrospective and analytical study aims to investigate PL frequency and correlate radiographic characteristics with histopathological findings. Radiographic variables include diameter, limits of radiolucent areas, presence of a radiopaque halo, and root resorption. Microscopic diagnoses were chronic abscess, periapical cyst, abscessed cyst, and periapical granuloma. The data underwent Chi-square independence and one-way ANOVA tests, with a significance level of 5%. Results: From 129 oral biopsy reports, 58 PL were selected (45.3%), of which 38 had image exams attached, with 9 exclusions due poor quality, a final sample was 29 exams. The male-to-female ratio is approximately 1:1, lesion site frequency was 48.30% in maxilla and 51.70% in mandible. No statistically significant difference was observed between histopathological diagnosis and independent variables. The periapical cyst presented a larger radiographic diameter mean between all diagnosis. The majority cases of chronic abscess presented poor radiographic limits without radiopaque halo. Conclusion: Although dental radiographs aid in diagnosis and treatment planning, the definitive diagnosis of PL is based on microscopic evaluation. Thus, radiographic examinations serve as auxiliary tools, offering diagnostic insights.
