Resumo: Objective: This study evaluated the degree of pain and radiation-induced oral mucositis among patients with head and neck cancer. Study design: This study included patients diagnosed with head and neck cancer undergoing radiotherapy. Oral evaluation was performed by physical examination and pain was evaluated by Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). Results: Forty-two individuals participated of the study. The vast majority of patients were male (88%) and diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma (92.85%). Around 83% of the patients had oral mucositis lesion, mainly presented at the 12th session of radiotherapy. The pain was reported in the majority of cases at the 10th session, with intensity 6. Half of the patients diagnosed with laryngeal cancer did not have mucositis. More than half of the patients (54.76%) had oral candidiasis lesions, started in the 12th session. Trismus and xerostomia were the first symptoms reported at the 7th and 8th session, respectively. Odynophagia, dysphagia and mouth burning started at the 11th session. All the patients had radiodermatitis, usually starting from the 16th session. Conclusion: Patients had onset of oral mucositis from the 12th session of radiotherapy, the pain has been reported in the 10th session with an intensity VAS 6.
