Resumo: Oral mucositis (OM) and hypopharyngeal mucositis (HM) are side effects of head and neck radiotherapy. While OM has been widely discussed, HM lacks studies. Objectives were: (1) to develop a prototype with an elongated optical fiber, coupled with an existing low-power laser, to access the hypopharynx using a nasofibroscope; (2) to propose a photobiomodulation protocol for HM. An anatomical study was previously conducted on cadavers. Describing a clinical case of a 77-year-old male with squamous cell carcinoma in the aryepiglottic fold, treated with 60 Grays of radiotherapy (RTx) in 30 sessions. He received treatment three times weekly for OM and the proposed HM protocol. After 15 days, he developed painful OM and HM with ulceration covered by fibrinoleukocytic exudate. He completed RTx sessions without interruption or the need for a feeding tube, maintaining oral intake. Despite being in development, the prototype and protocol show promise in aiding treatment.
