Resumo: Objective: To evaluate the knowledge of dental surgeons in a microregion of the state of São Paulo, Brazil, in relation to oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD). Material and methods: This study was approved by the Ethics Committee. Twenty-seven interviews were carried out using an adapted data collection instrument with objective questions about assessment of OPMD, analysis of clinical images and management of such lesions. Results: 52% said they had good knowledge on the subject; 70% have a medium level of confidence to perform oral diagnostic procedures; 52% were able to identify leukoplakia; 70% were diagnosed with actinic cheilitis; 30% were successful in diagnosing erythroplakia. Of the 27 interviewed, 15% chose incisional biopsy as the diagnostic method and 44% selected both types of biopsies (excisional and incisional). Conclusion: The professionals presented difficulty for diagnostic of leukoplakia and erythroplakia, and in the clinical management. Continuing education programs are recommended for these dentists.Acknowledgments: CNPq #120436/2023-0
