Categoria do Trabalho: Painel de pesquisa científica (PPC)

Área Temática: Patologia Oral

Resumo: Objectives: Investigate whether hookah and industrialized cigarettes smokers may have alterations in the inflammatory mediators in saliva. Study design: Saliva samples were collected from three groups: cigarette group comprising 26 exclusive frequent smokers of manufactured cigarettes, a hookah group consisting of 33 exclusive frequent hookah smokers, and a control group comprising 30 non-smokers. The levels of IL-1beta, IL-2, IL-6, TNF-alpha, VEGF and klotho were analyzed using ELISA DuoSet kits. Mann-Whitney test and Spearman correlation test was performed and a p<0.05 was considered significant. Results: Elevated salivary levels of IL-1beta, IL-6, and TNF-alpha were observed in hookah and cigarette smokers compared to the control group. Salivary levels of VEGF and klotho were found to be reduced in smokers saliva. A statistically significant negative correlation was observed only between age and IL-1beta expression in the hookah group (Spearman correlation coefficient = -0.465183, p-value = 0.0012) and between age and klotho protein in the cigarette group (Spearman correlation coefficient = -0.4552852, p-value = 0.038). Conclusion: Smoking patients exhibit a pro-inflammatory salivary Furthermore, lower expression of klotho in smokers saliva suggests potential premature aging of cells.
