Área Temática: Patologia Oral

Resumo: Objective: To evaluate the immunoexpression of galectins-3 and -7 in dermoid cysts (DCs) and epidermoid cysts (ECs) of the oral cavity.
Study design: Ten DCs and 10 ECs were submitted to immunohistochemistry. The percentages (cytoplasmic and nuclear) of positive cells for galectins-3 and -7 in the epithelial lining and fibrous capsule were assessed. The results were analyzed statistically using the nonparametric Mann-Whitney test and Spearman correlation test.
Results: In the epithelial lining, cytoplasmic and nuclear expressions of galectins-3 and -7 were observed in all cases of DCs and ECs, with high median percentages of positivity (P>0.05). In the fibrous capsule, cytoplasmic and nuclear expressions of galectin-3 were observed in all cases of DCs and ECs (P>0.05). Expression of galectin-7 in the fibrous capsule was not detected in any of the cases evaluated. Nuclear and cytoplasmic expressions of galectin-3 were positively correlated in the epithelial lining of ECs (P=0.018) and in the fibrous capsule of DCs (P=0.005).
Conclusion: The results suggest the participation of galectins-3 and -7 in the pathogenesis of DCs and ECs of the oral cavity. High cytoplasmic expression and increased nuclear translocation of these proteins in the epithelial lining may be relevant for the development of these cysts.
