Resumo: Objective: To conduct an exploratory analysis of oral cancer data provided by DATASUS through the collection, categorization, interconnection, and exploration of information, in order to identify patterns and associations that contribute to the understanding of the epidemiology of this condition.Study Design: Descriptive observational study using public domain data from DATASUS (2015-2019). Cases of oral malignant neoplasms (ICD-10: C00, C02-C06) were included, and cases with ICD-10: C01 and C14 were excluded. The study was exempt from submission to the Research Ethics Committee, according to the CNS Resolution 510/2016.Results: The DATASUS database lacks essential variables for epidemiological measurement of oral cavity cancer cases, such as race, marital status, tumor size, precise tumor location, tumor histopathology, and the use of curative and/or palliative treatment, compared to the SEER in the United States. Furthermore, some anatomical locations were not adequately separated from the oral cavity to the oropharynx, and there was no separation of the lip location from the oral cavity in the DATASUS database. Conclusion: The lack of data availability hinders the recognition of the epidemiological panorama of different regions of the country, directly impacting public health decision-making and making epidemiological studies that could contribute to the improvement of public health in Brazil unfeasible.
