Resumo: Objective: This study analyzes the factors associated with dentists performing biopsies, which are crucial for diagnosing oral and maxillofacial injuries. Study Design: A cross-sectional observational study gathered data from dental surgeons via an online questionnaire, addressing their responses to oral lesions and sociodemographic details. The data were analyzed using JASP software with a significance level of P<0.05. Results: The study found that most participants were female (65.8%), with a mean age of 30.95 years (±9.24). Approximately 58.05% of the participants held postgraduate degrees, and the majority (67.53%) worked in private clinics. Statistical analyses showed significant associations between biopsy performance and factors like gender (p=1.03e-4), access to oral pathology laboratory (p=2.49e-3), access to anatomopathological reports during training (p=0.01), clinical specialization (p=4.56e-3), prior experience with biopsy forms (p=6.64e-18) and consultation with an oral pathologist (p=3.80e-7). Binomial logistic regression analysis revealed that performing biopsies during graduation and access to an oral pathologist were predictors for performing biopsies during professional practice. Conclusion: Although biopsy is crucial in oral diagnosis, many dentists do not routinely perform it. These findings emphasize the need for targeted interventions to enhance educational strategies and clinical exposure during dental undergraduate training.
