Resumo: Objective: To assess the knowledge of dental students about the use of bisphosphonates and their implications for the maxillo-mandibular complex. Method: A cross-sectional study carried out with students regularly enrolled in the last two terms of the dentistry course in the city of Recife. A previously structured questionnaire was used as the research instrument. The probabilistic sample consisted of 201 students. The data was catalogued using the Epi Info programme and submitted to descriptive and inferential statistics. Fishers exact test was applied to check for possible associations between the variables, with a significance level of 5.0%. Results: Although most students claimed to be familiar with bisphosphonates, only 38.3% correctly identified the pharmacological group to which the medication belongs. Alendronate was the most frequently mentioned drug and osteoporosis was the most frequently mentioned treatment indication. Only 6.5% of undergraduates demonstrated adequate knowledge of the subject. Conclusion: It was concluded that most dental students are unaware of bisphosphonates and their implications for the maxillo-mandibular complex. It is urgent that practical measures be adopted to expand this knowledge in order to contribute to the prevention and effective treatment of osteonecrosis of the jaws.
