Resumo: Lateral periodontal cyst (LPC) is an uncommon odontogenic cyst that typically affects the interradicular region of vital teeth (premolars) of adults as an asymptomatic well-defined unilocular radiolucency. We report 13 illustrative new cases of LPC diagnosed in a Brazilian Oral Pathology laboratory in the last seven years. There were eight women and five men, with a mean age of 57 years (28 to 79 years old). Nine cases occurred in the mandible (eight cases in the premolar region and one case in the anterior region) and four in the maxilla (three in the anterior region and one in the premolar region), all of them as well-defined unilocular radiolucencies. Six cases appeared clinically as a gingival buccal swelling, while three cases were considered incidental radiographic findings. Microscopically, all cases of LPC were lined by non-keratinized epithelium with cuboidal and clear cells, showing whorled epithelial thickenings. Squamous odontogenic tumor-like proliferation was observed in two cases while multicystic formation was present in one case. The cases underwent conservative surgical treatment, and no recurrences were reported. LPCs from the mandible affected preferentially the premolar region while those from the maxilla occurred mainly in the anterior region.
