Título: ORAL TOXICITY IN AN ELDERLY PATIENT WITH BREAST CANCER: A CASE REPORT

Resumo: Chemotherapy is recommended in almost all cases of breast cancer. It destroys cancerous cells but also affects healthy tissues, leading to side effects due to its toxicity. This report describes a case of osteonecrosis of the jaws and necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis in an elderly patient being treated with doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide for breast cancer. The patient had whitish and detachable gums in both maxillae, with exposed bone, in addition to pain and halitosis. Clinical findings indicated chemotherapy toxicity. We referred the patient for oncological review and hospitalization due to morbidity. The microbial culture was negative for fungus, and the histopathological examination confirmed the diagnoses of osteonecrosis and necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis. The patient underwent debridement and received antifungal and antibiotic therapy with fluconazole, clindamycin, and ceftriaxone. After 21 days, the patient returned to the outpatient clinic for follow-up with considerable improvement. The case is still being monitored.
