Resumo: Glass ceramics doped with Fˉ ions (CF) of S53P4 composition were produced via the sol-gel route, characterized, and submitted to biological assays focusing osteomylites models. CF were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Particle size determination, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and liquid chromatography. CF were evaluated for in vitro bioactivity, cytotoxicity against the VERO cell line and antimicrobial effect on Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans. The data were tabulated and analyzed using the One-Way ANOVA test. Semi-crystalline phases sodium-calcium-silicate (bioactive phase) were found in CF. Micrographs showed particles with an irregular and porous surface. The CF (5 mol% - CF5 and 10 mol% - CF10) demonstrated biocompatibility and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) at concentrations below 10 mg/mL and 6.25 mg/mL, respectively. Hydroxyapatite formation was observed, mainly for CF10. Over a 24-hour period, 12 and 35 ppm of Fˉ were released for CF5 and CF10, respectively. It is concluded that bioactive glass ceramics (hydroxyapatite / fluorapatite formation) was effectively developed, biocompatible and with antimicrobial effect were obtained, mainly for CF10.
