Resumo: Objective: To investigate the knowledge of dental students at public universities about syphilis and its oral repercussions. Methodology: Cross-sectional study carried out using a specific form. Data collected in Excel spreadsheets and results expressed in tables and graphs. Statistical tests used: Chi-square, Fishers Exact and Likelihood Ratio, with a 95% confidence interval. Results: Three hundred and seventy-four dental students took part in the survey. The female gender was prevalent, and the ages ranged from 18 to 48 years. Everyone said they knew what syphilis was and the majority said it was a sexually transmitted infection. Almost 70 per cent of students stated that the infection was of bacterial origin and the oral mucosa was the most affected extragenital site. For the vast majority, the dental surgeon can make the diagnosis, however, almost 44 per cent of students at the end of the course did not know how to make this diagnosis. Only 10.4 per cent of undergraduates considered their knowledge to be adequate. Conclusion: Dental students have limited knowledge about syphilis and its oral manifestations, as they are insecure about treating patients with the disease and incorrectly answer basic questions related to the subject.
