Resumo: Policies that improve knowledge of the risk factors and recognition of oral cancer (OC) can help reduce its overall incidence and favor earlier diagnoses and better prognoses. The objective of this study was to investigate the knowledge about OC of dental patients.Study design: experimental cross-sectional.A questionnaire with 10 objective questions was used to evaluate knowledge about the location, etiology, clinical characteristics, prevention and treatment of OC.Results: 116 adult individuals participated in the study. The majority of patients were white men who had completed high school. Many respondents reported knowing OC (91.4%). The oropharynx was the anatomical region most associated with OC. Few interviewees knew that the disease affects the lips. Many interviewees pointed to smoking and the use of illicit drugs as possible causes of OC. Proliferative lesions, white lesions and ulcers were the clinical aspects most associated with OC by the interviewees. If OC was suspected, many interviewees would seek help from dentists and pointed to chemotherapy as a possible treatment for the disease. Conclusion: Although many people are aware of the existence of OC, there is still a need to improve knowledge regarding the recognition of suspicious lesions, risk factors and prevention of the disease.
