Área Temática: Patologia Oral

Resumo: Objective: To describe the clinicopathological profile of jaws' fibro-osseous lesions (FOL) diagnosed at a Brazilian oral pathology center. Study Design: This retrospective study analyzed records and histological slides of fibrous dysplasias (FD), cemento-osseous dysplasias (COD), cemento-ossifying fibromas (COF), and ossifying fibromas (OF) diagnosed in a 53-year period. Results: Of 19.600 cases, 156 (0.8%) were OFL, represented by CODs (37.2%), FDs (25.6%), COFs (25.6%) and OFs (11.6%). Regarding COD subtypes, 13% corresponded to focal COD and 13% to florid. Among the 18 OFs, 55.5% corresponded to juvenile trabecular subtype and 22.2% to psamommatoid. Fibro-osseous lesions commonly affected females (75.6%) in 4th decade of life and presented as asymptomatic (75.0%) mandibular lesions (57.4%). Radiographic features included mixed radiolucency (53.8%), with COD and COF presenting well-defined borders (41.9% and 27.9%), while it was poorly defined in FD and OF (30.8% and 17.9%). Microscopically, peritrabecular clefting was common in FD and COF (38.8%, 25.0%). Lesional bone tissue of COD and FD was completely merged with peripheral normal adjacent bone (45.5% and 42.4%), whereas COF and OF were frequently not merged (46.4% and 21.4%) and encapsulated (66.7% and 11.5%). Conclusion: Retrospective studies on clinic-radiographic-histological profile of FOLs might aid in the diagnosis of these lesions.
