Resumo: The objective of this study was to carry out a survey of the prevalence of caries lesions in children aged 5 to 6 years in schools in a health region in Curitiba/PR. This is a cross-sectional, descriptive and quantitative observational study. The sample was children aged 5 to 6, enrolled and attending municipal schools. Oral health examinations were carried out in the school environment, recording data using the DMFT index. 114 children were evaluated, with a DMFT index of 1.5. Individuals with no history of cavities were 60.5%. Among the DMFT components, the most prevalent was decay, with an average of 0.96 (64%). The highest DMFT value found was 14, composed exclusively of decayed elements. The PUFA index, which assesses the consequences of untreated caries, added 9 elements, with pulpal involvement a total of 8 times, and periapical abscess 1 time, distributed among 7 individuals (16.3% of the sample). Compared to the recently completed 2020 National Oral Health Survey, it was observed that our sample had a significantly lower prevalence of cavities. The proximity of schools to Family Health Units reinforces the importance of health promotion actions in Primary Care to combat tooth decay in early childhood.
