Resumo: The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence, risk factors and outcomes of oral mucosa traumatic ulcers (OMTU) in patients in intensive care units (ICU). Data were retrospectively collected during a 3-year period of time. Clinic and demographic data were collected from medical records. Main oral characteristics were observed during physical exam performed in the first day of admission in the ICU. Comparisons between subgroups of categorical variables with the presence of OMTUs were calculated using Fishers exact test. The study sample consisted of 1,788 patients from the ICU, of whom 919 (51.40%) were under mechanical ventilation. The presence of OMTU was found in 213 patients (11.91%). The lip mucosa was the most affected location (35.2%). Fishers exact test revealed that patients under mechanical ventilation, with oral bleeding, partially or totally edentulous, or with fractured teeth were more likely to develop OMTU. Lastly, for patients under mechanical ventilation, those with OMTU developed more Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia (VAP), but without statistical significance. OMTUs are a common and important complication in patients in the ICU, particularly in those under mechanical ventilation. They are likely associated with local trauma and may increase the risk of hospitalized acquired infections.
