Resumo: Introduction and objective: Oral varicose veins (OV) are a frequent finding in the dental office, but its finding is seldom recorded.
However, the presence of OV have been suggested in association with some medical conditions.
Objective: To fulfill a scoping review about OV and associated factors.
Methods: A search was carried out in Medline and Scopus with the terms "sublingual varices" OR "oral varices", to find descriptive studies of OV and associated factors. Case series and case reports were excluded.
Results: The initial search through title and abstract returned 892 results, of which 34 were selected for full text review, and the final selection were 18 papers.
Conclusions: The presence of OV, especially in patients under 50 years of age, can be a valuable indicator of the presence of different conditions such as systemic arterial hypertension, hypertension of the portal venous system, type 2 diabetes mellitus and ischemic events. However, more original studies are required to properly assess the associations.
