Resumo: Objective: Previous studies have shown that cold atmospheric pressure plasma (CAP) may exert antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties against important oral diseases such as oral candidiasis and periodontal disease. The aim of this study was to investigate the mitotic activity and possible DNA damage of oral cells exposed to a low-cost cost and flexible prototype adapted for intraoral use. Study design: Normal Oral Keratinocytes (NOK) were exposed to CAP, operating at high power conditions for 5 minutes at 15 mm of distance. After 24 h, the cells were fixed with paraformaldeid and stained with DAPI for immunofluorescence analysis. The mitotic index and micronuclei formation were measured at 1000 cells per well. Results: CAP treatment did not interfere in the mitotic index of the cells with similar results to the untreated control group (p>0.05). Additionally, it was not genotoxic with no statistical differences for the untreated control group (p>0.05). Conclusion: The CAP prototype investigated in this study does not interfere with the proliferative capacity of oral keratinocytes and does not cause genetic damage to the cells.
