Resumo: Cancer patients have increased occurrence of sleep-related disorders (SRD) compared to healthy individuals. Although previous studies have investigated sleep quality in patients with different types of cancer, no study has explored SRD in oral cancer patients. Here, we characterized sleep quality and disorders in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) patients. Sleep quality and disorders from 70 OSCC patients were evaluated through the questionnaires Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Insomnia Severity Index, Epworth Sleepiness Scale, and STOP-Bang. Before starting oncological treatment, 50.7% of the OSCC patients displayed poor sleep quality. Regarding sleep disorders, 14.3% and 14.9% of OSCC patients reported some level of insomnia and excessive daytime sleepiness, respectively. Furthermore, 50.7% of patients had a high risk of sleep apnea development. Poor sleep quality and sleep disorders are commonly observed in OSCC patients. Interventions to improve sleep may be crucial to promoting a better quality of life for these patients.
