Resumo: Objective: This review explores photobiomodulation therapy (PBM) as anadjuvant preventative procedure and early treatment for osteonecrosis of the jaw.Study design: There was a selection of scientific articles published between 2019 and2023 from PubMed, Scielo and Google Scholar databasis, using the keywords "Photobiomodulation", "osteonecrosis of the jaw" and "prevention". Results: PBMtherapy has been shown to be effective in most cases, especially to prevent theevolution of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw, which occurs inapproximately 5% of patients under bisphosphate treatment or equivalent. In theselected studies, females were the predominant patients (more than 70%). However, it is still important to develop more studies and randomized trials, considering that PBM therapy is evolving rapidly over the past decade. Conclusion: Photobiomodulation(PBM) involves the use of red and near-infrared light to treat injuries or lesions. Thismethod helps speed up the healing of soft tissues, reduce inflammation, and providepain relief. It is effective as an adjuvant approach to prevent osteonecrosis of the jaw,and also to treat it on early stages.
