Resumo: Recent studies have shown that there is a biological plausibility to support the association between periodontal disease (PD) and head and neck cancers risk (HNC). This study estimated a PD prevalence in individuals affected with HNC, as well as determining periodontitis severity. The group was composed of 47 participants with HNC, median age of 63 years old, predominant in males, representing 82.2% of the cases. All individuals were submitted to a complete periodontal examination, including bleeding on probing index (BPI), plaque index (PI), probing depth index (PDI) and clinical attachment loss (CAL). The periodontitis samples prevalence was 80.9% (40/49), with predominance for mild and moderate periodontitis. There were found significant differences between the BPI patients diagnosed with periodontal disease and the patients without periodontal disease. The individuals with cancer prognosis, stage III and IV, corresponding to 86.6%, presented periodontitis in some level (p = 0.03). With this, we can associate individuals with HNC showing a high prevalence to be diagnosed with periodontitis. With that conclusion, a positive association was found between PD and worse prognosis for HNC.
