Resumo: The search for biomarkers for Oral Squamous Carcinoma (OSCC), which help in early diagnosis of the disease, staging, assessment of therapeutic response, detection of recurrences and prognosis of the disease continues to be carried out. The most common biomarkers used are: Ki-67, p53 and p16. Histological examination, complemented with immunohistochemistry (IHC), still represents the gold standard for this diagnosis. Immunophenotyping by flow cytometry (IFCF) has been used for more than 20 years to identify, quantify and characterize reactive and neoplastic diseases, through individual cellular analysis and the expression of specific cellular antigens, being highly specific and sensitive for diagnosis, classification and monitoring of onco-hematological diseases. This research group has already used IFCF in the rapid diagnosis of oral manifestations of lymphomas and leukemia. We believe that IFCF can assist in treatment decisions quickly and within a perspective of multidisciplinary action in a hospital environment, as results can be obtained in a few hours. In this way, we present a proposal for the use of IFCF in the diagnosis of OSCC, as an auxiliary tool, in a complementary way to morphological and IHC analysis.
