Resumo: Introduction: Oral Potentially Malignant Disorders (OPMD) are defined as any abnormality of the oral mucosa associated with an increased risk of developing cancer. Objective: To correlate both clinical and histopathological features of OPMD with patients' profile.Study design: This study evaluated 22 patients, 14 women and 8 men (mean age = 60.5 yo). Patients' data were collected from medical charts. Results: Among these patients, 20 presented leukoplakias and 2 erythroplakias. Tongue border was affected in 9 patients, buccal mucosa in 8 and gingiva in 5. Surgical procedure was performed in 14 lesions, 7 using high power laser and 7 cold knife excision. The other 8 cases are on expectant management. Nine out of 20 leukoplakias had dysplasia, two of them were severe. Malignant progression occurred after 5 years of leukoplakia diagnosis. Such tumor was a superficially invasive squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) staging T1N0M0. Another patient had a SCC and developed leukoplakia 4 years after the cancer diagnosis. Leukoplakia was completely removed four times and has been monitored for over 20 years. Conclusion: The study revealed a higher OPMD prevalence in women. Severe dysplasia was related to cancer development in one patient. Support: CNPq
