Resumo: Objective
Cancer cells often reprogram metabolic pathways for survival, proliferation and metastasis. Although the dependence on glycolysis pathway is well studied, the role of cellular and/or molecular mechanisms of lipid metabolic reprogramming in supporting cancer growth and proliferation, especially metastases, are less understood.
Study Design
259 squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) were assessed, including oral verrucous carcinoma (OVC; n=31), lip SCC (LSCC; n=43), oral SCC (OSCC; n=104) and oropharyngeal SCC (OPSCC; n= 81), through the immunomarkers CD36, adipophilin, perilipin, mammaglobin and GCDFP-15, aiming to establish clinicopathological associations. The results were statistically evaluated using GraphPad Prism 5.
Results
Excluding OVC (with no expression), we have observed a similar profile in the other groups, with higher expression of CD36 and adipophilin, followed by perilipin, and significantly low expression of mammaglobin and GCDFP-15. However, the percentage of expression was different in the groups, with OSCC and OPSCC showing similar expression, followed by significant low levels of expression in LSCC. Relevantly, CD36 expression showed significant association with lymph node metastasis in OSCC and OPSCC.
Conclusion
Excluding OVC/LSCC, our results support the prognostic impact of CD36 in OSCC/OPSCC, reinforcing its role as a marker involved in metastatic mechanisms, with potential of immunotherapeutic target.
