Resumo: Background: There is limitted evidence of Antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy (aPDT) as a therapeutic modality in the management of osteonecrosis of the jaws. Objective: Our purpose in this pilot study was to evaluate the eficacy of aPDT in patients with osteonecrosis of the jaws. Study design: All patients who had osteonecrosis of the jaws were randomized in two groups: standard group (1), in which irrigation with chlorhexidine 0,12% was weekly performed and antibiotics if necessary; aPDT group (2), in which irrigation with chlorhexidine 0,12% was weekly performed, antibiotics if necessary and weekly aPDT application. The response of osteonecrosis of both groups were considered according to 3 levels: complete healing, partial healing and no response. Results: In group 1, 6 patients underwent surgical treatment and 50% of them had complete healing of osteonecrosis area and 4 patients are waiting for surgery. In group 2, 5 patients underwent also surgical treatment and 80% of them had complete healing, 2 patients no needed surgical intervention and 3 patients are performing aPDT weekly.
Conclusion: These preliminary data indicate that aPDT is a promising therapy for osteonecrosis management. However, continuation of this prospective study is necessary to better understanding the aPDT effectiveness in osteonecrosis treatment.
