Resumo: Objective: To evaluate the expression of inflammatory markers regarding to prognostic variables and survival in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC).Methods: Sixty-two paraffin blocks from patients diagnosed with primary OSCC were assessed. Clinicopathologic data were retrieved from medical records and tumor registries. The expression of COX2, TGFα, CD4, and CD68 was analyzed by immunohistochemistry. Statistical analysis included Fisher's exact test or the chi-square test and logistic regression. Kaplan-Meier method, and the log-rank test were performed. Results: Markers showed variable expression, ranging from 1.50% to 62%. In univariate analysis, high expression of CD68 was associated with sex (p=0.008), staging (OR 1.41, CI 0.20 - 2.62, p=0.01, Cramer's V=0.32), nodal metastasis (OR 1.23, CI 0.11 - 2.35, p=0.03, Cramer's V=0.29), and tumor size (OR 1.19, CI 0.04 - 2.33 p=0.04, Cramer's V=0.29). TNFα was associated with tumor size (p=0.02). Logistic regression showed that the high expression of CD68 acts as a predictor of worse staging (R2 NagelKurke = 0.13; χ² = 5.71; p=0.02). A significant difference in cancer-specific survival was observed in relation to TNFα (p=0.016).Conclusion: High expression of CD68 is associated with prognostic variables in OSCC, and high expression of TNFα is associated with worse survival in OSCC.
