Resumo: EPIDEMIOLOGICAL, CLINICAL, AND HISTOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF ORAL CANCER IN A PRECORDILLERAN CHILEAN POPULATION.Verónica Palacios*, Diego Romero, Ximena Mimica, Quililongo Rocío. Introduction: Oral cancer is a public health problem in Chile, it is imperative to recognize it in a timely manner to treat patients. Objective: Characterize oral cancer in a population group.Material and Method: We conducted a retrospective study (2013 - 2023) of epidemiological, clinical, and histopathological characteristics of malignant neoplasms in a group of individuals referred by dentists at a hospital in Santiago, Chile. Results: Squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity was the most common type of cancer, affecting more male smokers. Women were less affected and fewer were smokers compared to men. The second histological type was haematolymphoid tumours, and thirdly, salivary gland neoplasms and metastases.Discussion: The dentist is relevant in the diagnosis of malignancies in the oral cavity, and their clinical training in cancer screening can be optimized for early detection. Conclusion: Squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity is confirmed as the most common malignant neoplasm in the oral cavity. As it originates from potentially malignant disorders, there is hope for earlier diagnosis and better survival of patients.
