Título: PD-1 IS MORE EXPRESSIVE IN ORAL SQUAMOUS CARCINOMA THAN IN THE ORAL POTENTIALLY MALIGNANT DISORDERS

Área Temática: Patologia Oral

Resumo: Objective:
Cancer-related changes in the immune system have been related to the progress of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) with epithelial dysplasia are often associated with malignant transformation, though not all
progress to OSCC. PD-1and PD-L1 plays a significant role in enabling cancer cells to evade the immune system. The aim of this study is evaluated the immunohistochemistry expression of PD-1 and PDL-1 in OPMDs and OSCC.
Study Design:
23 OSCC samples and 117 OPMDs samples, including oral lichen planus (OLP, n=30), oral lichenoid lesions (OLL, n=9), oral leucoplakia (OL, n=27), proliferative verrucous leukoplakia (PVL, n=30) and OSCC from PVL malignant transformation (OSCC_PVL, n=13). 30 samples of inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia (IFH) were used as control.
Results
We find a high expression of PD1 in the connective tissue compared to OLL (p=0.001), OLP (p=0.006), OL (p<0.01), PVL (p=0.003), OSCC_PVL (p=0.004), and IHF (p=0.002). Furthermore, a correlation was made between PD-1 and PD-L1 expression and the degree of dysplasia and malignant transformation at OL and PVL groups. No significant association was found with these markers and clinicopathological data.
Conclusion
Thus, elevated PD1 expression in tumor stroma may have an important role in oral carcinogenesis and should be considered in cancer therapy.
