Título: PHOTOBIMODULATION THERAPY WITH TOPICAL DRUG TREATMENT (GLUTAMINE AND HYALURONIC ACID) FOR THE CONTROL OF ORAL MUCOSITIS

Nome do Apresentador: Victor Hugo Lopes de Oliveira MOREIRA

Categoria do Trabalho: Painel de pesquisa científica (PPC)

Área Temática: Odontologia hospitalar

Resumo: Objectives: To investigate whether the application of Topical Drug Treatment (TDT) composed of L-glutamine and hyaluronic acid, combined with Photobiomodulation Therapy (PBM), and Preventive Dental Protocol (PDP), would be more effective than the exclusive use of PBM combined with PDP in the prevention and control of severe Oral Mucositis (OM). Study design: Patients with mouth and oropharyngeal cancer (n=48) undergoing radiotherapy (RT) and/or chemoradiotherapy (CRT) were randomized into two groups: Group A (PBM + PDP) (n=24) and Group B (PBM + PDP + TDT) (n=24). To evaluate the effectiveness of therapies, the degree of clinical severity of oral mucositis (OM) and the questionnaires: PROMS, MORISKY, and OHIP-14 were assessed. Results and Conclusion: Regarding OM, both groups showed signs and symptoms from the 7th RT session onwards. On the WHO scale, 50% (n=12) of Group A presented severe OM, while in Group B only 8.3 participants presented severe OM. Regarding OHIP-14, Group B had less impacted Quality of Life (QoL) during RT/CRT with p <0.001 during evaluations: 14th, 21st, and 30th RT sessions. Therefore, the protocol that combined PBM, TDT, and PDP reduced the severity of OM and the impact on participants quality of life compared to Group A.
