Área Temática: Patologia Oral

Resumo: Objective: To review the scientific literature regarding the treatment of EM associated with herpes simplex virus (HSV). Methodology: A literature review was conducted in the PubMed, SciELO, and Lilacs databases using the keywords "erythema multiforme," "treatment," and "herpes simplex virus (HSV)." Results: Erythema multiforme (EM) is a mucocutaneous disease clinically ranging from vesiculo-bullous lesions to erythematous macules with a characteristic "target" appearance in the skin, commonly associated with previous infection by HSV in most of 80% of the cases. The treatment of EM caused HSV is symptomatic since spontaneously remises in a few days to weeks. Antivirals may be indicated in severe cases, which may also be combined with corticosteroids. Low-power laser therapy is also widely used in EM due to its analgesic, bio-stimulating, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects. Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) show promising results in EM. Topical treatment is based on antiseptics, antiseptic mouth rinses, and anesthetics. Conclusion: Antivirals, corticosteroids, and low-intensity laser therapy, when combined, may significantly improve lesions and enhance the quality of life of patients with EM associated with HSV, as well preventing clinical progression to more serious conditions such as Stevens Johnson syndrome or Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis.
