Título: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW WITH META-ANALYSIS OF THE USE OF ALOE VERA IN PREVENTION AND TREATMENT OF ORAL MUCOSITIS

Nome do Apresentador: Sibele Nascimento de AQUINO

Categoria do Trabalho: Painel de Revisões narrativas ou sistemáticas (PRN)

Área Temática: Estomatologia

Resumo: Objective: To assess the evidence of the efficacy of Aloe vera in the prevention and management of oral mucositis (OM). Study Design: This review adhered to PRISMA guidelines, following the PICOS strategy using Pubmed, Cochrane, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and "gray literature". Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published until August 2023 were included. Meta-analysis employed the mantel-hazel method, utilizing the dichotomous outcome via the odds ratio (OR) model. In cases of significant heterogeneity, a random effects model was adopted. Results: 280 participants were assessed, with 133 in the intervention group (mean age: 47.24±15.89) and 147 in the control group (mean age: 34.74±24.12). A statistically significant difference (p = 0.04; OR: 0.33; 95% CI 0.12-0.93) was observed favoring the use of AV compared to other treatment modalities. Given the substantial heterogeneity, subgroup analysis was conducted to delineate specific comparative groups. Notably, a significant difference was identified for AV only in comparison to the placebo group (p = 0.0004; OR: 0.17; 95% CI 0.07-0.46), with no discernible distinction regarding bicarbonate and benzydamine rinse (P>0.05). Conclusion: These findings suggest that Aloe vera offers benefits for severe cases of mucositis when compared to placebo, thereby reducing its incidence among patients.
