Resumo: Objective: To report the results of 30 years of oral cancer prevention through anti-smoking campaigns. Method: Between 1989-2018, divided into 5-year periods, health actions were carried out to prevent oral cancer. Anamnesis / intraoral clinical examination was performed in individuals older than 30 years of age, who enrolled in the campaigns. All answered a questionnaire about personal data and smoking habits. Results: 29.682 examinations were performed. 51.5%were men, with an income lower than 500 dollars. 40.2% were alcohol consumers and 73.9% had regular or poor oral hygiene. About oral care and prevention, 72.4% only went to the dentist when in pain and 86.5% never had or knew about oral cancer prevention. 6.314 oral lesions were detected(21.3% of participants). Common lesions were: traumatic, inflammatory, leukoplastic, (malignant characteristics), papillomas, erythroplasias. The prevalent age group was 41-60 years(67.7%). Percentage of smokers was recorded: 1989-1993(25.7%); 1994-1998(24.4%); 1999-2003(18.7%); 2004-2008(18.2%); 2009-2013(21.0%), 2014-2018(28.3%). There was a drop in the percentage of smokers from 1989(25.7%) when compared to 2008(18.2%). In the last five years, an increase to 28.3%(2018) was noted, coinciding with the increased alcoholic beverage marketing and its direct effect on tobacco consumption. Conclusion: Oral cancer prevention campaigns are tools for early diagnosis and guidance on smoking.
