Resumo: The primary aim of the research was to evaluate the periodontal health status of individuals living with HIV/AIDS, compared to a reference group. STUDY DESIGN: This study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee (5,458,985). The study comprised 134 patients (67 HIV-positive and 67 HIV-negative) who were randomly chosen and followed up at a Specialized Care Service outpatient clinic in a Brazilian northeastern capital city. Data collection for the reference group was done at a dental school. The Periodontal Community Index (PCI) was used to evaluate periodontal health among groups. PCI demonstrated a greater probing bleeding index and periodontal pockets larger than 5 mm in the HIV-positive group, revealing an increased incidence of periodontal disorders. CONCLUSION: Compared to those who are HIV-negative, people living with HIV/AIDS have a higher frequency of periodontal disorders, confirming the need of specialized dental care in this population.*This study was supported by CAPES - PDPG.
